2 1/2 Years And Growing

FRIENDS Peterborough has been operating at our downtown Peterborough location for  2 1/2 years as of April 1st, 2014.

We continue to offer help, hope and a hand-up to those who visit our office.

Thank you for your interest in FRIENDS Peterborough.  Drop by for a visit soon!

Here's an excerpt from our latest newsletter:

A Typical Day at the Office…

Typical?  There’s really no “typical” day here at FRIENDS Peterborough.  Every day is different.  Sure, there are some similarities.

Today was very eventful.  We had a man who had been drinking since 6 a.m.  He left the office twice to knock back two vodka Mudslides, taking only seconds to quaff each one.  His female friend who entered with him shared her sordid past.  At the same time another young man entered who has been sleeping at the warming room in a local church during this cold spell.

If they were able to share their stories I’m sure a book could be written to chronicle the hurts, pain and misfortune that had befallen each of them.  With a doubt some of it brought on by poor choices and being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  After the three of them had exited the office my colleague and I wondered if we had handled the situations wisely.  All we can do is listen and then offer any help that we can.

So what do we do at FRIENDS Peterborough?

Here are a few examples (a,b,c’s) of our non-typical days at the office:

·         Accompanying a client to court

·        Being an advocate for a client by discussing the housing situation with the landlord and superintendent

·        Completing a passport application for a client

·        Driving a client to a nearby town to pick up a mattress and box spring

Every day is challenging but we leave the office at the end of the day knowing that we are “making a difference…one life at a time.”

Sunday School Kids Pitch In

The children in the Sunday School at Auburn Bible Chapel pitched in to help the work at FRIENDS Peterborough recently.

For two months the kids raised money by doing chores around the house and collected money from family and friends.

On Sunday, December 1st, David Fisher was presented with several coffee cups filled with change to be used to help with the work at FRIENDS Peterborough!

What a thrill be watch the sparkle in their eyes as they made their presentation!

Refreshing Water

David & Darrin
During a recent heat wave we partnered with Darrin Gaudreau from Streethope (Threshold Ministries) and a good friend Don Shaughnessy to provide ice-cold bottles of water to those who passed by the FRIENDS Peterborough office.

- Don provided the water.
- Darrin provided the ice.
- David provided the bin.
- FRIENDS provided the location.
- God provided the idea & the people.

The bin filled with ice and bottles of cold water was placed on the sidewalk in front of FRIENDS with a sign on each side encouraging the street traffic to help themselves.  They did!

Over the three days we went through over 200 bottles of water

Don't Judge

Working with our clients has been an eye-opener for me.

Dealing with all manner of difficult situations, I've had to learn not to be so judgmental and be much more undertanding and compassionate.

As this graphic says, "You never know what kind of battle they are fighting."

We continue to offer "help, hope and a hand-up" to those who come through our doors.
